Green Gold: The Rise of Tanzania's Avocado Industry
he Tanzanian avocado industry is experiencing significant growth, with increasing exports driven by rising global demand, particularly in Europe. In the 2022/2023 season, Tanzania exported 26,826 tons of avocados, valued at approximately USD 77.3 million, marking a substantial increase from previous years. The country is now the third-largest avocado producer in Africa, after South Africa and Kenya, with major markets including Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Local farmers, traditionally focused on crops like maize, are transitioning to avocado cultivation through initiatives like the "outgrower model," which connects them with larger companies for better market access. However, this shift has raised concerns about fair compensation and the impact on local communities, as some farmers report receiving only a fraction of the retail price for their produce. The involvement of German investors and companies like Lidl and Aldi in sourcing Tanzanian avocados reflects the lucrative nature of this market but also highlights the challenges faced by smallholders in achieving equitable benefits from this burgeoning industry.
